Braking problems – Soft Pedal – Brake Booster?

Hey guys! 

 

So I have a Peugeot 205, CJ 1.4 1990.

 

Been struggling with a soft and bad working brake pedal. I’ve change shoes, wheel cylinder and master cylinder and there’s no air when bleeding the brakes. Front brakes looks quite fine as well. I’m thinking it could be some air leaks at the brake booster. (The car is also hesitating a bit on acceleration). And front brakes seems fine.

 

Would it be an idea to go after the booster? And if so, what seals/gaskets/parts would I change? And most importantly, where would I find some kits?

sounds more like it just needs the brake lines bled properly

you've done it already but sometimes it can take a few times

check all nuts and bleed nipples are nice and firm, not leaking

If your servo was faulty you would have little brake effort and a very  hard pedal , the servo isn't repairable at home ,the actual seal is inside and would need a brake specalist to fix. I would look at the servo vacum hose for damage /leaks and its cheap from bakerbm, sunroof cars have a slightly different 2 piece servo hose.

I have had a servo go bad on a Roland Garros 1400, but the symptom was really hard and notchy pedal, and the car really didn’t want to stop. 
Soft as you describe, I think you have something else to find. You say the calipers look ok but have you physically checked the pistons and sliders all move freely? Likewise at the drums are the shoes adjusted up to the drum properly as otherwise you get a long pedal.

Jack up the rear of the car, spin the rear wheels (one each time ;)) and have someone gradually press the brake pedal and see when it starts braking on that wheel in relation to the pedal position. My guess is your drum brake adjusters aren't adjusting properly which makes it feel like there is air in the system.

Is the brake pedal firmer with the hand brake on? 

 

Have you tried a pressure brake bleeder to bleed the brakes?

 

Have you tried clamping the flexible hoses one at a time to see if one line is worse that the rest?

 

Are the front discs warped causing pad knock off?  i.e is the pedal firm stood still but gets worse after being driven?

 

Might be the front pads, just had a probem with a car where I could not get the pedal hard regardless of what I tried , swapping the front pads finally sorted it, assumed they had never been bedded in properly.
