Hi folks,

About 18 years ago I did an MI16 swap on my 1.9 and about 15 years ago it randomly cut out and would only turn over but not run. I (stupidly) took the engine out to try to get to the bottom of it. In hindsight I think the issue may have been related to an aftermarket immobiliser or some other electronic issue. Anyway life got in the way (I won't bore anyone with the details) and I'm only now attempting to put the engine back in and my memory isn't serving me as well as I hoped it would so I was hoping someone might recognise the part in the attached photo. The other problem is all the parts belong to the MI16 engine and the original 8v were stored together for the last 15 years so Im not even sure which parts I did and didn't use on the MI16. If it makes a difference, I used the original 8v wiring with the adaptor for the distributor. I did mark the various connection points and I think I know what was connected electronically to the part and where the end of the hose might have been connected but Im struggling with what connects to the bit circled in red.  If anyone could shed some light on it for me I'd greatly appreciate it.

That is the cold start idle air valve from the 8v engine. Official name is the SAD, Supplementary Air Device.

On a 8v it bypasses the throttle body and supplies the engine extra air on cold start to make it idle faster than usual.

On a 16v I'm not entirely sure where you would plumb it in, it would need to go effectively around the throttle body, so one hose to the inlet ducting before the throttle, one hose to the inlet manifold after the throttle.

Thanks very much Tom, that actually makes sense with regard to how I marked it years ago.  I think I know how I should install it now.

Does the SAD from the 8v and the Idle Control Valve (pictured below) from the MI16 serve the same purpose does anyone know. The electrical connection is identicle on both so I think was using the ICV when I had it running.

They do more or less the same job, but very differently. If you are using 8v stuff which it sounds like you are, the 16v idle valve won't work even though it might plug in.. The 16v stuff is much better, but needs all the matching bits, wiring loom, ECU, which I'm guessing you haven't got.

Thanks Tom, yeah I did a search since I asked that last question and you're right about them not being interchangeable. I'll have to go with the SAD because as you guessed I don't have the 16v loom or ECU.  It's slowly coming back to me how I had it set up before.

Sounds like a bodge all round. It will never run properly on an 8V ECU.  Invest in a new ECU. It will run the 16V, as it should, probably even better. It will be money well spent, especially considering the value of the car now.
