Whirring noise from camshaft/cambelt

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just completed my top end rebuild on my 8V XU9.

All is well apart from a rather horrible whirring sound from the camshaft pulley area once the engine has some temperature in it.

It also appears that I’m loosing some oil out the pulley end of the camshaft. I have replaced the seal with an Elring part during the rebuild.

I’m fairly certain that it is not belt rubbing on the timing covers.

I’ve replaced the timing belt and tensioner (older style spring loaded)

I also got a set of new timing covers from BakerBM as mine were destroyed.

I’ve read on some other threads that this noise could be due to the cambelt being too tight but I’m not sure this is valid for the spring style tensioner setup?

If anyone else has experienced something similar and/or has some advice, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The metal cam pully back cover behind the pulley may be rubbing on the cam pulley if you have leaned on it while doing the belt change .

You can't really get the belt tension wrong with the spring pulley .

Hi Leslie, thanks for the reply.

I’ve removed the backplate and cover and the noise still persists.

With regards to the belt tension, those were my thoughts too!

Only at idle stops as you rev it ,not sure what it is tbh.,are the cam clamp bolts tight you didn't replace the water pump by the sound of it ? Although you say it's in the pulley area .

The oil seal leaking may suggest it's moved so I would check it's correctly in place first.

Sound might be "travelling" from a different part of the engine/engine bay.

Alternator/belt?

Upper engine mount shimmed?

Being very very careful  - Try holding a screwdriver against any metal parts to see if any one stops/changes the noise/sound/vibration

Thanks for the advice, I think I have now found the problem.

It’s the inner cambelt cover and it is rubbing in the water pump area. You can manipulate the cover with the car running and the sound goes away.

Does anyone have any tips as to how to remedy this. There’s only a handful of fixings that hold the cover on so not sure what I can do differently.

Cheers

The inner cover is very flimsy and relies on the outer cover to hold it in place , I have original earlier style covers on mine and I think they were better. Its a while since I fitted mine as the ones on the car were all rubbed too and had broken tabs. There isn't much room when the engine is in the car to see what you are doing and mine were fitted before the engine went back in.
