Alternative Thermostat Housing/Distributor Blanking

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

Could anyone please point me in the direction of the part number for the thermostat housing without a distributor hole that fits the 8V XU9 engine.

Failing that, what have people done when blanking the distributor hole when running a coil pack/aftermarket engine management.

Thanks

The late Motronic GTI's have the housing without the hole. Or the SPi auto cars have the same.

Or machine an alloy bung and weld it in

Or make a plug with lugs and bolt it in

Or I've heard of people finding a core plug the right size and press it in

Lots of ways really.

But they still have a distributor.

I thought XU5M or XU10J2.

Pretty much all XU10 8v except early carb. models .

Also newer XU5JP , XU7JP 8v from 406/Xantia best/easier to find in bits for spares .

The 309 Turbo simply had a steel plate and a gasket:

I think I've replied to you about this on Facebook groups too but there is the option of using a Renault Clio 172/182 cam blanking seal, ironically, I think it's the smaller of the two you need but it's usually cheaper to buy the pair.

Do you already have the later style of thermostat housing that has the coilpack mounts but has the dizzy hole?

Thanks Graham, it was me indeed!

I’ve ordered the Clio 182 cam blanking plugs which should be here tomorrow/Saturday. It seems like the most cost effective option.

My thermostat housing has a dizzy hole but can’t see an obvious bolt pattern for mounting a coil pack.

Thanks again

309 turbo??? Can’t say I’m aware of one of these other than the turbo cup cars I’ve seen.

Seems like a nice solution if you got a laser cut plate made up with a gasket.

Thanks.

It was sold as an engine kit like what they did for the 205 GTI 1.6 125 hp and the 505 turbo 200 hp ; pretty much a cup engine without the forged pistons but with a watercooled T25.

165 hp and 235 N.m with nothing done on the drivetrain. At half the price of the base GTI they didn't sell many kits and it was even worse after the launch of the GTI16 that was cheaper.

Ignore the coloured outlines but you can see the difference between the earlier & later dizzy thermostat housings, makes for a nice neat coil pack installation.

With the earlier style you'll still need to find a way to fit the coil pack in your engine bay so if you only have that  type, I'd search for the later thermostat housing from either a late SPI 205, 306, 405, 406 etc which had the coil pack from the factory.
