Alternator/Starter etc (GTI6 205)

Morning gang, it’s been a loooong while! 
 

Today I decided to dig out my 205 for the fist time in 10000 years. Starter signal was playing up so I used a wire to short the excite wire to the starter positive to start. 
 

car started (yay) but now have a constant battery light even with ignition off and key removed. 
 

I admit that when I was trying to start it, I shorted the jumper wire on the inlet for a moment. Could I have fused something?

 

also, a bit of smoke from alternator area…..

Magic smoke is supposed to stay inside, now that it's gone there must be a short either inside the alternator or on the wiring harness.
