Torsion bar lowering

Shouldn't really expect to be sorted at low cost, unless it's bodged.

 

Ideally you need a a refreshed axle with new bearings and seals as a minimum. Trailing arm shafts may be able to be reused, but any imperfections where needle roller has dug in, then definitely change. Add rubber mount bush replacement, unless in good order (which probably won't be). 

 

Spend the money wisely now, and you should never have to worry about rear end again

Expanding on Mei's reply above;

 

With the torsion bars removed from beam tube & radius arm, set dummy shock length to give desired ride height and refit the torsion bars by rotating a spline at a time until they slide into tube & radius arm with little to no resistance, certainly not driven home with a slide hammer.

I remember my first 205 an 1986 5 door diesel and the rear did not move a mm when you stood on the towbar as it was totally siezed  :D

Having re searched this thoroughly, I have found a company that will fully refurbish it and set the ride height for less than it was going to cost me to transport the car and just have it lowered. Considering I have replaced or reconditioned  pretty muh every other mechanical item this seems the sensible and fortuneately the cheapest option.

Put it this way, I've had to put right what IMAXLES have sold.

 

Anything from not being lowered to wrong spec torsion and arb, and even supplying a 'disc axle' with drum brake spec stub pins.

Not come across many of theirs but its not been great my wnd either, had to rebuild one that collapsed half way through a stage rally.

My own experience of IM axles has also been very poor, but that being said I'm sure it's been said on here that the beam tubes are ok, so if you had a beam that was scrap get just the beam from IM axle but replace the bearings and seals that come supplied. Someone can hopefully confirm this but I'm sure I've read it on here which may provide more options for you.

I also won't supply axles to anyone which have been machined and sleeved.

 

A few times on stripping machined axles the trailing arm was removed with outer bearing and machined sleeve stuck solid on shaft

Been said before, but you really need to travel to get an enthusiast to do your axle, not a 'specialist' who offers them cheap
