Diesel Needs Bleeding

Recommended Posts

Mines the XUD7 TurboDiesel with the original spec Lucas DPC injection pump

was previously getting air into the diesel feed via the s*it diaphram diesel filter and a worn banjo washer at the IN pipe to the pump

but fires up first revolution every time since then, until yesterday..

two mornings in a row I've had to bleed my system of air by cracking the injector union nuts and cranking the engine

double checked the fuel feed all the way to the pump and its all still great

(tested the stop solenoid, its working fine so ruled that out)

but air's getting in somehow

all I can think of is either

- the injector pipe union nuts weren't tight enough and were letting air in

- the injection pump is taking in air somehow

- or the return hoses from each injector are letting air in, but I don't think that's possible ??

any ideas appreciated

Definitely possible,  especially if the oem 3mm i.d solid rubber lines are perished or replaced with substandard overbraided stuff which is 3.2mm

thanks mei

I've never had access to the OE return hose (peug #156494, 3x7mm)

when couldn't find any OE rtn hose, instead got what looks to be the same spec but overbraided as you mention, pictured below marked with:

SH GERMANY  601 501 - DIN 73378  TYP B  3.0 x 2.0  18/18

the braid frays at the ends but the rubber seemed to be in good nick and didn't want to come off

anyhow, for now replaced the 3 injector return hoses with new lengths

..see how it goes in the morning, first turn

and will chase down some OE hose

Readily available at a dealer, possibly under a 306 or 405 part number, about £12 for a metre length.

That stuff you have there should be sufficient though as its properly advertised as 3mm

update -

no air leaks, nothing wrong with the fuelling/injectors/return hoses/injection pump

it was the glow plug line that had come unplugged (pulled it when checking something else)

after eliminating all the possible air leaks and with a bit more time I then checked the glow plug line

it was unplugged at the control box

made up the line myself when installing the diesel and went with a male/female slot plug

might see if there's some way I can put a ring terminal on instead to prevent any repeat

thanks mei
