IDLE ISSUE 1.6 GTI

Hello everyone, my 205 gti 1.6 has developed a strange idle, it revs to 1300rpm and drops to 600, up and down and won’t idle at a consistent rpm. It also sometimes stalls when I come to a complete stop and then it is quite difficult to start. Any help would be gratefully received.

The 1.6 usually idles much better than the 1.9.

 

I would first check for an air leak in the hoses on the engine side of the AFM: that would allow unmetered air into the inlet and therefore give you a very weak mixture and rough idle.

Thank you, I’ll have a look tomorrow. The idle isn’t rough, it’s very smooth but idles from the ranges mentioned in my post.

Sounds like it needs the throttle body idle drillings cleaning out, the idle position setting properly and the idle switch checking. Plus check for air leaks.
