Advancing cam timing

Has anyone played around on a dyno or rolling road with advancing a standard 1.6 cam 2-4 degrees on a fast road engine with standard injection but flowed head, I wondered what effects it had, whether it lost at the top & gained torque down low as you would expect or if it killed it completely, same with retaking, if it gained up top but lost low down.

Never done it on an 8v, have done with a gti6, heard about it from a friend that knows a guy that has run group N 306 rally cars.

Certainly  the theory  is there that advancing the inlet bumps the torque and makes it less peaky, bringing the power peak a little lower as well,   definitely  made a difference but i dont know what specific gains are.
