BE3R vs BE3 gearboxes

Hi,

 

i saw that in peugeot service box there is a be5 and be5R gearboxs. what is the difference between them and how do i know which one i have?

Hi Ido,

iirc the additional "R" indicates that the gearbox is reinforced (R for the french "renforcer" I belive). So the whole gear housing is strutted a lot more.

there are detail changes to the gears and shafts between Be3 and be3r, and again to be4r

The BX and 405 mk1 had BE1R/BE3R with the regular Ø77 diff (that may have been a bit stronger).

On other cars with a BE3R/BE4R you find a Ø84 diff.

It's easy to spot a BE1R or BE3R by looking at the bellhousing:

1981>BE1>1989>BE3>1998>BE4. There was a bit of overlap between the BE3 and BE4 with the last BE3 beign basically BE4 with a BE3 bellhousing.

The first "R" was the BE1R on the BX GTI 16v in 1987, the Ø84 diff started in 1989 with the 605 and XM.
