X-mo 17 2 Cars Posted October 6, 2020 Hi Ido, iirc the additional "R" indicates that the gearbox is reinforced (R for the french "renforcer" I belive). So the whole gear housing is strutted a lot more.
welshpug 1,622 Posted October 6, 2020 there are detail changes to the gears and shafts between Be3 and be3r, and again to be4r
SRDT 146 Posted October 6, 2020 The BX and 405 mk1 had BE1R/BE3R with the regular Ø77 diff (that may have been a bit stronger). On other cars with a BE3R/BE4R you find a Ø84 diff. It's easy to spot a BE1R or BE3R by looking at the bellhousing:
welshpug 1,622 Posted October 6, 2020 be3r was not till 98/99.
SRDT 146 Posted October 7, 2020 1981>BE1>1989>BE3>1998>BE4. There was a bit of overlap between the BE3 and BE4 with the last BE3 beign basically BE4 with a BE3 bellhousing. The first "R" was the BE1R on the BX GTI 16v in 1987, the Ø84 diff started in 1989 with the 605 and XM.
