Starting issues - oxidised relay

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Just had my 1984 1.6GTi fixed and the culprit turned out to be oxidation of a relay related to fuel supply. I assumed fuel pump relay was the faulty part, but turns out it is the relay in the box under / beside the battery. Am told by the French Peugeot garage who did the job that this is not the fuel pump relay. My French language skills aren’t quite up there to fully understand the technical explanation.

Although an early car, it has been restored prior to my ownership so I can’t be totally sure this relay carrier is original.

Can anyone explain what this relay is and can I easily replace it? It was merely cleaned by the garage and reinstalled. In all their 205 history they had never seen one fail before. Apparently unique to the GTi , out of production and very expensive to replace .... or is that maybe not the whole story ....?

Thanks for any info.

It sounds like the tachymetric relay which is indeed the fuel pump relay.

They are located in the engine bay on early GTIs (or under the dashboard by the ECU on later models)

It is a very common failure point and can sometimes be repaired by re-soldering the PCB internally. On an early model with the relay mounted in the engine bay it is likely the terminals and/or the connector were corroded.

The original Cartier relays are out of production but other brands are available.

They are available from a specialist in France I recently bought some bits from Serie04.com and cheaper than I remember buying one for years ago for my car from Peugeot.

Thanks for the above replies.  Further to the story, here is a photo of the offending relay (according to the French Pug dealer who carried out the repair).  I think the gunk around the box is his attempt to waterproof it.  As mentioned before, it sits in a box down beside the battery in the engine bay, whereas I understand the tachymetric relay is inside near the steering column.  So can anyone identify the part in the photo?

I think that in the photo is the fuel pump relay. As yours is an early car (84) that is where they were located.

The early GTI are special in many ways, this is not just a "dumb" fuel pump relay nor the classic tachymetric relay.

For some reason the early 1.6 Jetronic ECU had no rev limit built inside so this tachymetric relay also acts as a rev limiter.

If you can't find another or repair it you could try to use the newer relay + ECU.

Another option is to look for a K-Jetronic fuel pump relay, some of those also had the rev limit inside.
