Brake Fluid Level Cap / Sensor...

Recommended Posts

bacardincoke

Discovered my sensor in the cap of the reservoir isn't working - 1989 1.9 GTI.

Likely being stupid but can't find any on-line other than second hand... are pattern ones available new or is there for example an alternative from another Peugeot that will substitute?

I reckoned it was something along the lines of the water level sensor as you could hear and feel the insides move up and down if you shook it.

The whole thing's a sealed unit from what I could see, the blue top must be glued to the white body.

After cutting off the base as in he pics. below you can see it's a simple float / plunger affair... as the level drops so does the brass disc until it bridges the gap between the spade terminals, completing the circuit  and illuminating the warning light.

Like my water sensor it was gummed up and the disc / inside contacts were badly tarnished, presumably enough so as to prevent a good connection.

Works 100% now after a good clean up though because the spades had to be bent upwards to get them out  they just wouldn't bend back straight enough on reassembly and were causing an intermittent break, hence the 2 x screws.

I initially glued the base back on but I'm probably going to put a brass rod or similar across the opening instead... I'm not sure if even superglue can withstand brake fluid and as all the base seems to do is prevent anything falling into the main chamber it'll do the same job.
