It's interesting that the laptop still disconnects, have you tried plugging it in after the engine has started? It might be a burst of noise from the starter causing it in which case it is probably sparking from the brushes or something so it might be a sign that it's on its way out.

Im sure I tried that the other week qith no luck. Now that the misfires sorted I'l be able to spend a bit more time trying to sort it.
