Brake calipers for ‘88 1.6 GTi

Recommended Posts

After allowing my errant son to drive my 205 GTi for the past 6 months he reported that it had run out of brakes. After opening the caliper and two backing plates completely devoid of any friction material fell out I figured I needed new pads. Worse was to come. After noticing one of the flexible pipes was weeping I figured I’d I needed new pipes too. So having removed the pipe together with the caliper I decided to check the bleed nipples were free. You guessed it, the bleed nipple sheared off. So now I also need a recon caliper. When I checked the various websites with my reg number, they tell me I need solid discs. Mine are vented. Has my braking system been upgraded at some stage in its checkered history and if so how do I know what caliper / pads I need? I can’t find any part numbers on the caliper itself. On the bracket that attaches to the caliper it says 343144 and then Bendix. Any ideas please?

The number is a casting number and meaningless.

Those are standard 1.6 GTI Bendix

calipers.

Try Brakes International in Rochdale.

All the 1.6 Gti’s that I have seen have had vented front discs, not solid.

All 205 GTis have vented front discs.
