Removing steering rack

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to remove the steering rack (nothing wrong with it, just need to get to the bodywork behind it), but am struggling. I've removed the two bolts that hold it onto the subframe, which were a fiddle as I struggled to get anything to grip the nuts as the fins of the brackets were in the way. But I can't seem to undo the steering shaft from the rack. I've undone the clamp bolt, but no amount of wiggling will free it. Any tips on getting it out?

It's a 205 GTi 1.9 with non-PAS and the splined rack (as far as I can tell).

The nuts should be square nuts that lock between the fins. With those nuts you just can remove the bolts from the other side.

Soak it with WD40 and maybe remove the bottom part of the steering column to ease working on it.

Very gently tap a small wedge into the pinch on the lower column coupling to open it up slightly then it will come off the rack easily.

Bit late now but its usually easier to remove the column while the rack is still attached to the subframe as otherwise both parts are moving about and you cannot get much purchase on anything.

I finally got the bugger off. I put the the bolts back in to hold the rack in place, then used a combination of a big screwdriver and chisel with plenty of bashing to get it to shift. I just need to get some square nuts to replace the incorrect hex ones now.
