Fuel sender level gauge too high on instrument cluster

Recommended Posts

If you are finding your fuel level gauge sits too high on your instrument cluster then this post is for you..

Causes:

 - Someone replaced either the instrument cluster or fuel level gauge w/ one from a different phase 205.

Fix:

 - Take the middle wire from the fuel gauge (top of fuel tank) and place a 470 Ohm resistor inline with the wire.

Testing:

 - Get your fuel tank to near empty (yellow light on)

 - Turn your ignition on while testing, if 470 Ohm's isn't right for you then you can try a different resistor.

Why 470:

  - Was the closest I had.  I reckon anything in the 400-600 range would probably be fine.

Horrible Corporate link for those too lazy to source their own resistors:

There is a mention of this problem here:

Thanks for sharing your solution.

If someone has the opposite problem it should be solvable too via a voltage divider circuit.

Just to clarify, this fix didn't work for me.  It kept my level too low when the tank was full.  I'm going to try a voltage divider to see if it helps at all.
