Skip 1 Posted November 27, 2018 Hey guys. New here so not sure which category but this seems close and I could choose it lol. Ok I have a question. My 205 rally car is a ‘93 and was manufactured with a catalytic converter. The engine has been swapped and now has an Mi16 bottom end with an 8v head and twin 40 carbs. Problem I have is MOT. As it hasn’t got the CAT garages are not interested due to emissions laws and finding a “friendly” garage is increasingly difficult. Has anyone else had this issue and if so how did you get around it? I’ve heard something of exemption or as the engine is pre CAT it doesn’t need to be tested as a CAT model and classification can be changed? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. jackherer 543 Posted November 27, 2018 https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/Section-8-Nuisance.html#section_8.2 Section 8.2.1.2 is the bit you need: Quote 8.2.1.2 Gaseous emissions You must inspect vehicles with spark ignition engines first used on or after 1 August 1975. You don't need to check: L category vehicles hybrid vehicles – with electric and combustion engines hydrogen fuel cell vehicles two stroke engines – unless they are subject to a catalyst test If a vehicle first used before 1 September 2002 is fitted with an engine that's older than the vehicle, you must test it to the standards applicable for the engine. The vehicle presenter must have proof of the age of the engine. If a vehicle first used on or after 1 September 2002 is fitted with a different engine, you must test it to the emissions standards for the age of the vehicle. The tricky bit is proving the age of the engine, various components have a date stamp on them which may be enough.
