What is this?

Despite having had the car for 26 years I've never noticed this hole with threaded holes above and below it. Putting the engine back in, I bolted the plug lead carrier into the top hole and it fits perfectly so I'm assuming that's right but what is the big hole for (and the lower small hole for) or can I just ignore?!

Lots of question coming up as I took the engine out 18 months ago expecting to replace two weeks later but didn't happen that way!

I believe it is where the cam driven mechanical fuel pump fits on carburettor based engines. With fuel injection it is redundant.

Something like this would bolt on there and be driven by an extra lobe on the cam.

Many thanks! Remember something similar on Sambas.
