My 1.4 GR. Owned it 3 odd years, its always had a slight oil leak.

 

Its an old car I reasoned , they leak, ill look into it one day.

 

3 years later and a oily patch on the drive I decide today to investigate.

 

Its a bloody distributor O ring - that is all, 3 years of oil on the drive for the sake of an O ring!   Anybody else care to share their bone idle tales?

My sump gasket leaked for about 11 years, water /oil heat exchanger thing behind the oil filter leaked for maybe 5 years, cooling fan switch not been working for maybe 3 years and about half a dozen other things, all fixed this year without much effort, all put off/ignored but so easily fixed.

actually even the classic -my wipers don't appear to wipe away water can take me weeks to actually sort, maybe im just bloody lazy!

I've replaced it a couple of times and it seals for a short period then starts leaking again.  Stops the centre of the car rusting

Definitely my wipers, switched on once for the MOT and then last week on a track day. Completely useless at the moment!

Yellow cap on rear number plate fixing - drove around with a rusty screw head on show for nearly 6 months!

 

Swapped it three weeks ago and it still makes me smile every time I use that car.

Minor rust treatment and rust prevention - coming back to bite me now

Literally everything. Been up on axle stands for a year now after failing the MOT on some minor stuff. Currently looks like this though but it's taken a year:

My GR really has a long list

1.door that doesn't always close properly

2. Mysterious squeak in door detailed above.

3.rear wash wipe failed.partailly investigated but not resolved.

4.oil drip. O ring changed . Drip still present.

5. Sloppy gear change. Works but meh! Definitely the rods.

6. Glove box. Zip tied as the lock has failed.

7. Windows all. Various grubby stickers that I really should remove!

8. Alloys . Need a fresh coat of paint

9.fit a new rear wiper blade but see point 3.. 

10.fit new pedal rubbers because they are knackered

11. Fit new bulbs in the dash so i can read stuff at night.

12. Fix the squeaky fan... Again

13. Investigate the odd smell when I turn the heater on. Smells like coolant but goes away after 30 seconds. But coolant level stable .

14. Refit my door card pockets 

15. Change the air filter 3 years and counting

Etc lol

I have however (for the sake of balance) recently changed the top mounts, fitted new leads,ignition coil and sparks,fitted a new ignition amp. Fitted a new set of tyres and brakes pads and discs. Serviced it(apart from the air filter)

You say that but when you get around to fixing it all you'll find is a loose bolt on the subframe that takes 30 seconds to tighten. Very much in the spirit of this thread

The sometimes hard to unlock passenger door.

Finally had to remove the handle and lubricate when it refused point blank to unlock last week. now smooth as anything, but.....

I really should have lubricated the window sliders whilst it was stripped down as window is very slow to operate.

Sluggish wipers, put up with for years until it stripped the plastic gears in the motor.

Oh, also the creaky passenger door that i ignored until the roll pin rusted enough for the bottom hinge to separate.

CLEAN IT!!!! 

Respray, the roof is now " cherry white" (six months after cherry pink! ) 

 

As for the cti......finish the bloody 16v conversion,,, or sell it to someone who will

Hmm, was in Sainsbury`s  t`other day , had to manouvere a bit to reach the car park ticket machine through the open door.

6 months ago the spot welds on the pressed steel channels affixed to the bottom of the drivers window, seperated and disconnected the glass lifter at the front and I havent been able to open the window since.

Need to strip the door and sort it soon, as it`s a real pain using the car now.

I may be wrong but I think you will likely find that the bottom lifter on the glass is totally rotten and fallen to bits. I've seen it a number of times now. I would say make sure you've a better one to hand before you start the job!

Normally thats what I expect Tom, but this time, the usually rotten bit is fine but has broken across the spot welds. I had a look inside and the bottom bit was sat in the base of the door.

It was on the glass when the door was forced open by scum and they stressed it badly, amazingly the glass didnt break.
