Rear brake Caliper Question?

Recommended Posts

HelmutGTI

I can´t fit my new rear brake pads, my calipers wont retract as much as it needs to fit.

Is there a solvent for the issue or is it new calipers on my buy list?

Not to teach you to suck eggs but you do know that you need to wind the piston back in on the rear calipers?

Have you got the right pads? Should

only be about 8mm friction material on them.

Peel the rubber boot back and check for corrosion or debris.

You can wind these calipers back just using the shank of a screwdriver to be honest. They don’t take much winding back.

True, but for the 14quid I like the tool. Use it as well for front brakes.

I don’t see how you can use that particular tool in your link on a bendix rear caliper, the pad carrier passes through the centre line of the caliper piston?

I’ve a couple of different wind back tools including a pneumatic one for other stubborn vehicles which do require them but on a 205 for no expenditure I use a screwdriver of which I have numerous.

They do go back in easily without hassle

The DS3 calipers needed the tool as elbow grease wasn't going to happen

Thanks for your replies, but after I sand blasted them and noticed som heavy corrosion and also manage to brake both air nipples in the threads, I decided to order a set of new calipers to match the rest of my rebuild standard,

Cheers!

I have this tool for that:

Calliper Piston Rewind Tool

Like Tom said, its quite clear you have never used that tool on your Bendix rear calipers, the pad carrier shape makes it impossible

On the bendix rears I don't use the complete tool, but only the driver part, which fits on a 3/8" ratchet or T-bar.

But wisdom on here says it's a crap tool, so ignore my advise and don't buy this few quid tool.

Why do caliper pistons require winding back in to make room for new pad thickness? Aren't they pushed out linearly?

Is it something to do with the handbrake mech?

yep, it has a self adjusting ratchet mechanism in the piston, which allows the handbrake to never need adjusting once the slack is adjusted from the cables
