205 GTi vs. 106 GTi

Recommended Posts

Lunatic

Hi,

before I bought my 205 GTi 1.9 I had a 106 GTi 16V. I sold the car to a good friend of mine, so I had the chance to drive it again in comparison to the 205. Is it just my feelings or is the 106 GTi a little faster? Both cars are stock and have about the same milage. Dont get me wrong, I like the 205 for the car itself and not the power but on paper both cars should have about 120hp and the 205 should be slightly lighter.

We did not have the time or possibility to test both cars against each other at the same time.

So, did anyone of you compared his 205 to a 106 and can tell something?

Thanks

there's reasonable chance that the 106 is running closer to its original power output due to being newer and having a more sophisticated harder wearing engine management system.

its also a shorter geared 16v engine so will always "feel" quicker, in my experience a healthy non cat 1.9 is a good match for a 106 gti.

106 is quite a bit stiffer sprung, rear axle is narrower and much larger rear anti roll bar so the handling I think is sharper, however I don't think the shells and suspension up front make up for it.

I have done plenty of 'comparing' and a good 1.9 is incredibly close to a 106 GTI/Saxo VTS, there is nothing in it.

Last summer whilst on the way to Devon on the 303 I had the opportunity to do some 'comparison ' as a 106 gti appeared behind me. For about 15 miles I'd say the cars where evenly matched. By happy coincidence a Golf GTI also joined the party. The Golf wasn't as quick although obviously who knows the relative condition of the other 2 cars. I think my 1.6 gearbox helped with spirited takeoff but overall nothing really between them.

In my experience I'd say the 106 feels a touch quicker and a little more exploitable due to cornering a little flatter. Still prefer the 205 overall though as it feels more alive!

Only my opinion. Driven and owned lots of 205s and also owned a 106 from new. Wicked little car.
