Cleaning Trims And Painting Red Insertd

Recommended Posts

Gaz205

So I've covered a grey dye in another post for the trims, I'm considering putting the grey trims in the dishwasher at 45 degrees after giving them a scrub with a dish sponge and wiping with alcohol wipes. Potentially a good idea or not really gonna make much difference? This is all prior to using then grey dye (phase 1 car)

Any paint code or good match for the red insets or suggestions on how to clean them? A light polish hasn't really taken the grubbiness off them.

The car is getting a respray and I'm not expecting it to be amazing for the money but would like to refresh the trims at the same time to bring it up to match the freshness of the paint.

Thanks

I did my red insert rouge vallelunga (p3kb), the color of red 205 gti's. My rationale was that it had to match that color, otherwise the inserts would be ugly/stand out on red gti's.

It turned out to be correct or very close. I gave mine 2 layers of clear coat. That will make them shine more than original, but it will give some extra freshness on a newly painted car.

f*** me, how big is your dishwasher?

I'd say that part is a waste of time. Just make sure they are scrubbed really really well with a stiff plastic brush and hot water with all purpose cleaner mixed in. Then rinse off. Then go over with IPA/Panel wipe. That should be enough for the dye to go on nicely. One thing to be aware of is I found with Plasticare (and so I assume this may apply for other similar dye types) is that it doesn't take well to certain types of plastic. OE 205 bumpers and trims are fine, but some pattern bumpers are a different plastic and don't absorb/bond with the dye as well, causing a patchy/streaky finish.

You'll only have a problem if they've been contaminated with certain products in the past, probably silicone containing ones. I just washed my bumpers and trim with crappy car shampoo with wax in it yesterday while washing my car then I put plasticare straight on with no streaks or patches.

It's pretty big! Obv not for the bumpers...

So I have plenty of prep time so hopefully can remove the majority of the silicone.

I think they are original bumpers so hopefully the dye will take well

F'it I'm gonna do them black!

Thanks for the tips
