2.0L Head On 1.9L Block

Recommended Posts

my3AWDgst

Hey guise,

I'm trying to figure out if 10J4 head can be bolted on 1.9L MI16 aluminum block. I know they are identical but reason I'd like to run it is to use camshafts sensor for my ECM link application. I'm currently using 1g DSM CAS and it's working great, however I would like to run both cam and crank sensors this way I don't have to set base timing every time I remove CAS or do other timing work. Also at same time I wouldn't mined switching to 10J4RS intake manifold.

Unfortunately we never got XU10J4 in US so it's extremely difficult to track down parts and informations.

My questions are..

Which timing belt, pulley's and covers to use?

Which head gaskets and head bolts to use?

Thanks guise.

In this picture you can see housing I designed and had it made, this way I was abled to bolt up 1g DSM CAS. This CAS is driven by intake camshaft.

no need to swap the head, just the inlet cam and thermostat housing.

It will fit and most of the gaskets etc are all the same as 1.9 Mi16, but there's a few gotcha's off the top of my head:

Exhaust manifold bolt pattern is different - 9 stud on 1.9 and 10 stud on 2.0

The headbolt nearest the cambelt on the exhaust side will be different - I think you can probably get away with an additional spacer.

You can't use the 1.9 Mi16 distributor setup as the CAS tang fits where the rotor arm drive would be and the thermostat housing covers where the dizzy cap would be.

I think that's the main bits. I've not done it but I can't see why you couldn't keep the 1.9 Mi16 cambelt covers.

Otherwise, I think you can fit the 2.0 Mi16 thermostat housing to the 1.9 head, just needing a hole drilling for the oil return from the vacuum pump, and using a 2.0 inlet cam. Certainly I've done it the other way around to retrofit the 1.9 Mi dizzy on a 2.0 head to use the early management.

Thank you guise.

No need to machine back of the head to exept 10J4 thermostat housing? Is Thermostat housing using O ring or sealant to prevent oil from leaking?

Any need to change exhaust camshaft or those are the same as well?

I'm assuming this is thermostat housing I need to get?

I believe so, PeterT may be able to confirm exactly.

Exhaust cam is different on the XU10 in that it doesn't have the thread for the 405's hydraulic pump

You only need the oil return path if you use the 306/S16 version which has a vacuum pump. The 405 version has a blanking plate as shown on my car. It's an XU10J4 housing on an XU9J4 head. I press the timing tang off and then put a normal seal on.

If you can't locate an XU10J4 inlet cam, you could ask somebody who's competent with a mill & lathe to make one. ie picture with 2 cams

I recently sold my spare housing & cam tang to Shane17 on here. That's his new cam and tang in the pic.

If using a 306/S16 cam, you also need to drill/tap the end of the cam to prevent oil entering the housing via the gallery. Note the hole in the cam journal. The 405 cam is solid.

You can use all the XU9J4 cam covers etc.

I'd put an add on Aussiefrogs as well.

Forgot to say, continue using the XU9J4 exhaust cam. You can use an XU10J4 exhaust cam but you'd have to drill/tap for the M10 thread.

Use XU9J4 head bolts and spacers if using XU10J4 head. Over the water pump, you'll need to add a custom spacer.

Some pics of a 405 cam with and without tang. And inside of thermo housing, 306/S16 cam.
