Dvla - Declaring Engine/fuel Type Change

Getting close to getting my steel grey 205 on the road, it was originally a standard stdt but now has a gti-6 on bodies in it. Has any one recently changed fuel type and engine size with the DVLA?? Seems like i may need a letter from a garage for the changes which isn't a problem. My other question is as it's an L reg 93' will i need to run a cat, or as it was a diesel without a cat to start with, can i get away without??

 

Any info would be useful!

This is the relevant part of the MOT testers Manual:

Vehicles Fitted with a differnt engine

 

 

Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.

e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.

 

Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter

to prove engine age.

How you prove the engine age is a different matter and you may need to talk to more than one MOT tester.

 

edit: and of course a gti6 is actually newer so you will need a cat, I'm used to doing this with Mi16s.

There's also the unknown engine type (I.e not original to model) which goes as non cat, which would apply to any 16v in a 205.

 

thats how my zx has been tested at two different stations.

Have never bothered, always made sure it is insured correctly

I am doing something similar and was unsure of the legal situation about informing the DVLA of an engine capacity change , sounds like it is not essential , but my insurance company will be told of all mods . I am also changing the colour from red to white which I will be informing them about .

Police/legal wise as long as its insured correctly the plod won't havce a problem with it. Only issue you may get is when a MOT tester see's his computer saying 1.8 DT and he's looking at a 2L petrol! Much like the smart arsed tester I had with the Goodwood, "thats a V6 not a 1.9" alright f***ing sherlock!

Ok cheers for that. it's just how they decide to check emissions. Hopefully I can get away with a non cat test. I may just get it all motd and on the road, then change it on the v5.

Check the VIN number to find the date your 205 was manufactured - many 1992/3 205's were manufactured before the August 1992 cut off for CAT tests and sat around unregistered. It's the manufactured date that is key, not the registration date as is commonly thought... hence things like 309 Goodwood's on K and L registrations still only have a non-CAT test.

 

If it was manufactured before the cut off then you're laughing as it's a non-CAT test regardless.

 

If yours was manufactured after the cut off and obviously has a later engine in it then it should have to pass a CAT test at MOT time AFAIK.
