Stock Mi16 On Boost

Recommended Posts

Kane

Been having a nosey through various pages over the past few days but wanted to clarify what I've read.

How do stock mi16's cope with running boost? The majority, if not all of the cases i have seen are running aftermarket pistons but basically stock everything else. Granted in some cases rods have been shot peened but in general are mi's suitable for boosted applications as standard?

I think the question is, how much boost? Allan's supercharged Mi16 makes 250bhp from about 6psi if I remember correctly. The internals are 100% standard.

Would you say that supercharging is more forgiving with respect to load applied to engine components in comparison to turbocharging and that may be why Allan's has survived for so long? Or could you expect to run similar power via a turbo without too much risk of failure?

not so much how much boost, but also how much air at that boost.

all in the mapping imo and experience, sandy has mapped mine a few times now. I run 11psi on a stock 6 lump and it hits full boost at 2/2.5k from a eaton m90 charger which according to the books it shifts 1,400cc of air. Ive done roughly 30k under these conditions and use it daily aswell. I do agree its less punishing on internals over turbo as its not one big hit at once. I cant speak for the rotrex but eatons normally build there boost through out the rev range.

Mine runs about 7psi, properly put together engine and mapped safely, seems to love it!

Good to know that there are some performing well on stock setups.

This is the problem about not having the car local to work on you end up conjuring up all sorts of madness if you have to much thinking time :D

Another quick question for you all..

Are they any geometric differences between the XU9J4 block and the steel solid deck XUD9 block i.e. block height?
