Maybe, yes. And not only the models mentioned yesterday. It could affect all EURO5 two litre diesel engines.

What about other VW Group models? My Octavia has the same 2 litre diesel engine as the Golf GTD as do various Seat and Audi models.

I used Skoda's emission data which was confirmed by HMRC when I got the car originally as I'm sure thousands of other drivers did.

Apparently Euro spec cars may be affected too and with the USA story, reporters are forgetting VW's policy of platform sharing which is the widest in the industry.

Could be interesting!

wicked

It's publicly known that these things happen... Only Volkswagen is the one that's caught now. Just like the Tour de France; the guys who are caught with EPO are the bad guys; the rest plays innocent.

True but what "quality"?

Hasn't the ADAC admitted of tweaking the figures for the 'ADAC car of the year' (increasing the votes for the Golf by x10)?

I doubt they did this as a "good will gesture" for VAG by themselves..

Sure I read somewhere though that the device worked in circumstances only the US emissions test introduce...so it wouldn't actually trigger during our MoT test? Saying that I have no knowledge of the exact test over there and how it is possible the car can detect that it is subject to an emissions test.

I think the ECU identified that it was on a rolling road test, due to there being no steering input, constant speedo readings etc, and then went into 'calibration' mode, and turned on the full emission reduction system. So it wouldn't have any impact on a UK MoT, as there is a static emissions test

The UK static test would be even easier to detect, if the transmission is in neutral and the revs are raised implement emissions controls but if the trans is in gear disable it. I'd be surprised if this isn't being done to some degree with all UK spec vehicles due to the nature of the test making it so simple.

My understanding was that for front wheel drive stuff, if it detected rear wheels stationary and fronts at speed, it knows it's on a rolling road so turns all the fuel down.

The Urea that gets injected on the front face of the SCR (selective catalyst reducer) is only operational when its on the emissions cycle. Various theories such as the ones Toms mentioned and a few other exist as to how the car knows it is under the emissions test (wheels ahead, bonnet switch open, etc etc). As I understand it the function of the UREA injected onto the SCR is to massively reduce the NOx emissions from the tailpipe.

So why didn't they inject this all the time on the road. Basically the cars would have had to have a massive Urea tank, and that brings additional cost, packaging issues etc. OR the customer would have to keep topping up the urea tank, which doesn't exactly fit with the long mileage service plans! So they programmed the software to cheat. Ooops! They won't be the only ones is my bet...

The big question is whether the EU test which has a lower NOx pass rate, is passable without spraying copious amounts of Urea on the SCR...

My understanding is that is doesn't effect the UK MOT because they don't actually measure anything, its just a smoke test, and regardless of the map or whether the car senses its on an emissions test or not the particulate filter will have that covered.

Things like CO and HC aren't measured as on a petrol car.

And NO, the current scarestory, isn't measured at all.

I may be mistaken but that was my impression.

Obviously i realise it will effect the VED bracket, economy, VOSA tests and the like, but not the MOT afaik.

It will pass the MOT no bother, but the question is whether the car will pass the EU emissions regulations. A car has to pass it for a certain amount of years and mileage I believe. So in theory they could grab a car that is 8 years old and 100,000 miles and it still has to pass.

With their defeat device in place, it would pass. Without it in place....there is the big question.
