Front Shocker Top Nut

Recommended Posts

dobboy

I've noticed my front NS top shocker nut has loosened a bit (i can spin the earth tag) despite it being nyloc.

What tools do you use to tighten these?

The shocker rod has a female spline type thing that i can hold to stop spinning with a torx key, but various spanners i have don't fit in the cup thing......, and i can't use a socket as i need to hold the centre rod thing with torx key.

I've thought of grinding two flat edges on a socket to allow me to hold it with mole grips/spanner, but wondering if i'm missing an easier way.

TIA

You need a swan neck ring spanner ideally.

Another option is wrapping a rag somewhere close to the top of the insert and clamping some mole grips on. Then a quick buzz from an impact gun.

spark plug socket with spanner flats and a long allen key :)

swan neck spanners need quite a sharp angle and slim necks, the shallow angle Halfords ones dont cut it.

Socket held in some mole grips with torx key through the middle of the socket.

Cheers for the ideas, i like the spark plug socket idea but will need to check i have a 22mm which i doubt. Failing that, I'll try Davies idea.

Rattle them up, a decent gun will usually do the trick.

The full lot spins using a gun Tom, and if possible i'd like to torque them to proper settings.

Simes, how do you hold the stud with the female torx if that's on the nut?

Jack the car up on the subframe so the suspension pulls down on the nut then buzz it, it wont spin then. Bloody thing are a royal pain in the arse, I had this problem with my original ones as someone had cut the tops of the struts off to avoid bonnet dents and smeared the threads out.

Mine are 21.

Just nipped home, never had a 21mm socket but 22mm seems a good fit on mines.

I bought the spanner, the fancy right angled one ended up at over £20 by the time delivery and the dreaded was added on.

You'll love it and wish you'd bought more!

I've got a Facom set and added some sizes either side of the ones in the set.

Expensive but I've had them 15 years and they look like I bought them yesterday!
