1.9 8V Tapping And Grinding

Just bought a 205, only heard the engine ticking over briefly and it's tapping a lot and there's a faint sound of grinding somewhere.

 

The lad said he used it regularly to drive from Sunderland to Liverpool.

 

Sorry I can't be any more detailed at the moment, just trying to get a rough idea on where the problem may lie.

 

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Take the alternator belt of and run the engine to see if the grinding noise is still there to eliminate alternator / pullY's etc.

I will do that!

 

Something else I forgot to mention is that it's using coolant, I'll be doing a headgasket at some point I think.

Grinding could be the water pump then.

That's a good shout! Sorry it's been 3 years since I've owned anythinf French, should be common sense half of this stuff!
