You might find you'll have difficulties scrapping it without the V5C document.

There's no problem buying the car without the V5C document, but obviously ask questions why the document is missing and make sure that the car is the sellers property to legally sell!

Providing that you know enough details, you can apply for a replacement V5C from the DVLA - cost is £25 from memory.

Thanks Antony
How will I know if it is his legally to sell?
He's told me he brought it with no log book he's had it for 6 months sitting there doing nothing. Now he wants it gone, only 200 pounds so if anything was to go wrong that's all I could lose out on? Do you think?

I've scrapped a few cars without V5Cs. Many times I've not even been asked for one, but I've used merchants who will accept an MoT with the vehicle details on as documentation if a V5C cannot be presented.

They just assume the documentation you've given relates to the shell you've taken - I've never had any cross referenced. If the vehicle is in my name and therefore in my best interests to be processed correctly, I often have to insist on a certificate of destruction as they won't always produce one, and I don't want a catalogue of vehicles stacking up against my name.

On occasions where I've scrapped a shell before the V5C has even come back from the DVLA in my name, I've just written to inform them I no longer possess the vehicle as it was scrapped at XYZ merchants and they have always acknowledged it without question.

I guess that's what I will do chop it up. The shells got quite a few dents on it anyway the guy had a scrap yard in his back garden so It got beat up a bit. Shame another goes to 205 heaven but it's unlikely to sell to be built up without a v5. The engine and gear box is missing, maybe the v5 went with these.

Dont need v5 to scrap. The last scrappy just took digits from vin. V5 is just registration doc, not proof of ownership. If you dont intend on taxing it then the dvla will never know its yours.

I'm breaking 2 cars at the minute and luckily neither owner had the log book! My scrap man just takes cars no questions asked.

Worse case you'll have to chop it up and put it in you neighbours wheelie bins.

Quite a few scrappies do require a V5C to scrap the car - the two I've used in recent years both do for example. No V5C and they won't accept the car to be scrapped.

That's why I warned that he might have issues without. Equally I'm sure plenty are rather less bothered.

If you have in mind the local merchant you'd take it to - ring them and ask.

Before I posted the topic I did a quick google search and found out you should have the v5 to scrap it. But could've help but wonder how often this is really the case.

I don't have a scrappy in mind or anything I only got the car yesterday will require a week to strip it.

Looks like the plan is, to cut out common rusty areas which are sound cut up into four. Quite like the neighbors wheelie bins idea.

My local scrappy do it by the vin, but some can get funny.

You will be ok.

To scrap the full car (drive in or over 90% present) they should ask for the V5 but just a shell minus engine etc they won't take the V5 because if the engine gets logged against another car it can cause them problems.

I weighed in the shell for my 306 last week but because I'd kept the engine, I've to send the V5 to DVLA stating it's been used as a donor.

first time ive heard of that, scrapped cars that have been scrapped properly with the logbook yellow part have their engines sold out of them np and nothing ever comes of it.

Just gut what you want and the pikeys will do the rest no bother no cutting anything up just let them take it in 1 piece easy and simple
