Standard 1.8 Gearbox On A Gti6

Just curious to know what a standard 1.8d gearbox performs like on a gti6 in comparison to the 1.6 and 1.9gti gearboxes?

 

I've had a quick read through the ratio sheets after a search but I think there's a difference to whats on paper and how it actually drives.

 

Currently running the 1.6 box after changing from the 1.9 which I really like but its not really an all round box.

 

If I read correctly the 1.6 with the diesel 5th gave a good improvement on that?

 

Thought I'd ask what peoples experience or suggestions on what's a good way to go.

The diesel box will be dire on anything that hasn't got a lot of torque, i.e. turbo or supercharged. A GTI 6 with a diesel box will be pointless, the peak speeds in each gear will be hilarious though.

 

An Mi16 or Xsara VTS box is probably the best 'all rounder' on a 16v engine.

If your the kind of guy that wants 140 in 4th and a 0-60 time of 12seconds go for it lol

As jackherer said bit silly if you like your license. I have a xsara vts one on mine and it's spot on acceleration wise but on the motorway it's revs are quite high but I rarely use it on big roads as there's not many round here

An Mi16 or Xsara VTS box is probably the best 'all rounder' on a 16v engine.

I have an Mi box on a 1.6 GTI, imo its probably the best ratio box for all engines, 8v or 16v.

I've used the 1.9 box on the gti6 lump for about a 1k miles and see what people say with it being too long, the box I really quite like other than the short motor way trip I use it for.

 

So I assume from responses using the 5th from the diesel on the 1.6 isn't a improvement on it then?

 

I mainly asked as I remember an escort rs turbo I had that had a diesel gearbox previously fitted and for some reason unknown to me the diesel gearbox seemed to be a commonly spoken about "upgrade" not sure how correct that is.

 

But like jackherer mentioned if it's supercharged or running a turbo it would make sense.

My mate Ryan had to put a hdi box on as he seized a vts box. He had to keep the car running.

He eventually got 85+ out of 2nd
