S/c Gti6 Won't Start After The Winter

Recommended Posts

Rolando

hello all,

its that time of the year where we all start prepping our 205's for the summer. so last weekend i charged the battery up, checked the fluid levels and stuck some fresh fuel in. went to start her up and she started straight away but only running on 3 then down to 2 till it cut out and now it just turns over.

i can hear the fuel pump priming, I've checked for power at the coil packs and injectors and all have power at turn over. I've changed the cam timing sensor and fly wheel/crank sensor but now i'm running out of ideas what it could be?

baring in mind it ran perfect when i parked it up last summer and started fine once when i tried it over winter.

any ideas or suggestions would be great.

thanks Rolando

have you checked you actually have fuel to the injectors? as i have seen fuel filters break down over time and cause problems also have you tried new spark plugs

no haven't tried new spark plugs. £40 for a set so trying to leave that as a last option. how would you check for fuel at the injectors? pull them out and turn it over? when i was pulling the fuel pipes off and turning it over etc, the fuel did smell really stale but I've never heard of fuel filter breaking down. is it common? thinking about it i haven't changed it in 5 years!!! ill give that ago but surely it would kick at least? theres nothing there at all when trying to start it.

yer i just pulled the fuel rail out and cranked it to check mine a while back and you can see the spray from each injector. im not sure if its common on petrol as i have only really seen it on old diesel tractors but have heard of it happening on a few year old lorry.

you could always take the plugs out and clean them up with a wire brush if there coked up.

Presumably it uses special plugs because it's supercharged? it might be worth fitting a cheap set of standard plugs for now, it'll rule out the old plugs and you risk fouling the expensive plugs while you're trying to get it running so it'll save them if they are OK.

no need to spend £40 on plugs, just get standard type of appropriate heat range, commonly used is the bcpr7es or 8es, or if you want twin electrodes then bkr7e or bkr7ekc

As WP says. I'm running 8's and they're cheap as chips.

It sounds fuel related to me, can you hear the pump running? I'd make sure you've got fuel at the injectors before you do anything else.. Chances are if its been standing it could have easily sucked up something from the tank when its been disturbed.

Yeh a few people have said it sound more fuel than anything seen as it died slowly as if it ran out of fuel.

Got fuel at the rail as I took it off to change the cam pulley sensor and while it was off, had a mate turn the key which in turn popped off an injector because of the pressure? I didn't have any injectors wired up so going to try that tonight to see if their spraying.

I would try a squirt of easy start or something similar into the intake, if it fires on that you know it's a fuelling issue and can rule anything out on the ignition side.

Silly question maybe but is the cambelt still in one piece?

Yeh cambelts still on and tensioned. Going to check the timing on the weekend I think.

Tonight I took all 4 plugs out and they were soaking. So it's deff getting fuel. And all 4 plugs/coil packs are working as well. So now I'm guessing it could be an ECU problem and it's chucking fuel in at the wrong times? Or is there a sensor that controls spark and fueling??

change the spark plugs and make sure you have a fully charged battery or evan a jump pack/leads connected. the problems you are having sound very similer to when i did my conversion and starting it for the first time after the engine had been stood for a while, mine would turn over and splutter then soak the plugs but as soon as i put a just pack on it run fine.

Yeh going to give that ago on the weekend. Got new plugs turning up tomorrow. Going to do the fuel filter as well while I'm at it. After this, I'm out of ideas what it could be tbh

Fuel. Drain it all and add fresh. Take pipe off the fuel rail and use the pump to drain. Even if you have to keep turning the ignition on and off to keep pump priming.

Stick 20L of 97 in.

Take the plugs out, disconnect the injector plugs and crank it over for a few seconds do that a couple of times.

Clean the plugs up and refit it all see if it does the same thing.

Map sensor may well be worth checking?
