Strong Fuel Smell When The Engine Idle

Recommended Posts

idoari

Hi,

i'm restoring my 205 gti it was run lumpy but now it runs OK but there is a STRONG smell of fuel from the exuast and engine bay when idle (maybe i have a hole in the manifold) and here's what i've done :

*cleaned AFM with carb cleaner include the mixture screw threads and the sensor itself with MAF air sensor cleaner.

*cleaned and tested the SAD (resistance of 53.4 ohm when cold)

*cleaned the throttle body include the screw holes and passages.

*replace spark plugs (NGK recommanded)

*cleaned rotor arm and cap.

*replace ignition amp (brand new blue bosch amp) with thermal grease.

*replace fuel filter and refurbished fuel injectors

*cleaned fuel pump mesh filter and checked for leaks

*check and fix all the wiring of the engine loom.

*tested coolent temp sensor (blue one) - seems OK but ordered a new one just in case.

*i ordered new HT leads still on the way - not yet installed

*replaced the oil filler cap and cleaned the oil hoses.

*new oil and oil filter (genuine)

*check for air leaks after the AFM include the hoses under the throttle body.

*replaced all the cracked vacuum hoses and oil hoses.

my old spark plugs was very oily before i replaced them

what more can i do ? maybe it's the AFM faulty?

maybe it's the TPS? maybe it's the ECU itself?

i've read that it could be the fuel regulator but it's job is to deliever the fuel back to the tank and i've put my hand on the return hose and fuel is flowing there.

i've also read that it could be the dizzy advance unit. how can i test it? ( the advance unit was disconnected when i've got the car)

thanks
Ido

I've test the AFM as well with the haydens mauanl:

terminal 9 and 8 resistance - 170 ohm (should be between 160 - 300 ohm - OK)

terminal 8 and 5 resistance - 397ohm (should be between 350- 450ohm - OK)

terminal 7 and 5 resistance - 600 ohm completley closed and around 1Kohm when completly open BUT in the middle it's jumps to Megaohms and hundereds of Kohms - is it normal?

ALEX

Could be the anti- Vac valve for the petrol tank. Little white plastic cylinder, It hangs down from the rubber hose on the filler neck.

I've seen these go missing on a few 205's
