Sorry to crash your party but I'd be interested to know the ratios for the 306s-

1.8 16v xs

2.0 8v xsi

the 1.8 8v is showing 4 boxes on service box, but not sure if they would have all been used, as there seems to be only 2 cw&p's available. I am sure Meirion will be along shortly to clear that up!

But I was under the impression that all 5 speed 16v gearboxes in the 306 were 4.42 final drives :)

ha, with that you should be able to find the ratios easy enough on service box ;)

I know from past experience the 2.0 XSI 8v has quite a short box. Makes for a low top speed as the gutless engine only revs to about 6000rpm!

So would be ok in a gti6 205?

I've got a really clean really low miles one

No idea Dan  .. it's just something i got from forum member via pm :

How come theres 4 different ratios for 1.8 8v box ?! .. seems to me a bit unusual , why would they make 4 different ones for the same car with said engine type ? (certainly doesn't sound cheap solution manufacturing wise ..)

Are you sure about that? The 'box off a 306 1.8 16v I had was a 3.94 FD and I've nothing to suggest it wasn't the original gearbox.

Doesn't have to be intended to use 4 flavours. Could be that the ran out of stock of a gear set and took that was in stock... (belt stop -> big $$ loss )

Or that it turned out to be cheaper to use another set.

Sometimes ratios are also related to the fitted tire size / trim / model. (larger rims / break vs hatchback)

A friend of mine has a 306 1.8 16v cabriolet gearbox in his 205 gti6 and that too has a 3.94 final drive.

I feel I might have missed an important segment of info from this, there was a date which they were all 4.42! I'll try and find out as I have it all written down somewhere
