Fog Lamp Voltage & Intermittent Starting Issue - Advice Required

Recommended Posts

All - Looking for some advice on 2off topics relating to a 1.6 1987 'E' Reg. 1.6 GTi :

Problem 1 - Rear Fog lamp only getting 10.5v at light plug connector so bulb is not illuminating - Dash Switch working ok (ie off = 0v, on 10.5v at

Bulb), Bulb independantly checked & ok. Looking for ideas / causes of why not 12v (i.e - could this be a poor earth?).

Problem 2 - Multiple repeated Intermittent non starting when turning the ignition key, then eventually starts (every time i try to start the car, but

always eventually starts)). Once started, turn off key, sometimes starts 1st time, other times requires multiple turn of key till eventually

starts again (again always eventually starts). - when not starting get the classic 'click' sound suggesting the starter motor is jammed,

so assuming it was a starter motor issue, changed with brand new starter motor, yet issue is still there. Only possible clue is that

during the multiple turn of key, it feels like the issue may be related to the ignition barrel/switch itself, as if i 'wiggle' the key it would

'feel' that there is connection issues with the ignition barrel/switch itself (also the dash lights when on stage 2 of the key switch, i can

get to flicker on/off when 'wiggling' the key). Is the ignition switch a common 205 issue or do i need to be looking elsewhere. Any

advice much apprieciated - Many Thanks.

1: Check your voltage using a multimeter and some bright metal for earth. If you still have 10.5, then possible cable/switch issue. How is your battery voltage?

2: Check the switch at the back of the ignition, as these have been known in some cases to cause issues.

the clicking is not a jammed starter but a solenoid not travelling fully due to a voltage drop down corroded wiring.
