Hello again, my 1.9 gti has been to the peugeot garage today for diagnostic on a starting problem and because of all the bodged wiring on it they've told me they can't figure it out and that its a dodgy fire hazard... I've been trying to keep this car on the road and it's been my daily drive for about 3 years... I'm almost crying at the thought of not being able to save it... I don't know anything about electrics... All I know is that it had 2 alarm systems installed and removed and sound systems installed and removed... As well as hid lights. Can anyone offer me any advise? Please :(

Hard to say from your description, but sounds like you need a better garage to be honest if they can't figure it out!

Unfortunately, these cars have often had numerous electrical bodges over the years and alarm and sound system installs are often the prime culprits. Good news is that, by and large, they're not too difficult to put right and worse case is going to be sourcing a replacement loom from someone breaking a car.

If you can't find anyone local to have a look, I'm in Swindon and if you are passing this way I'd be willing to cast my eye over it and give you an honest opinion of what the score is and best way to resolve it. I've had to resolve all too much alarm installer bodgery over the years and I doubt yours will be the worst I've seen!

There's Miles and his company Pugracing down near Sailsbury too who is very well regarded with all things 205 :)

It was the Peugeot garage in Cribbs Causeway... Need to sort myself out with another motor to take me to work before I get anything major done... I think because I look really young and I'm a woman they didn't want to look to far into it because they probably think I can't afford to get it fixed..!

They said they couldn't find the diagnostic point (which I didn't think it had?!) and noticed some burnt out wires... I'm going to assume a full re-wiring job would be well over a grand...?

I think the first part of that says it all - if they're looking for a diagnostic socket to plug in and read off the fault codes like a modern car then they're going to be very sorely disappointed! Only the CAT equipped 205 GTi 1.9's and their later Motronic management had any form of on board diagnostics / code reading, but that's very primitive by modern standards (basically gives fault codes via a flashing LED)

Burnt wires is a concern, but it won't be a grands worth of re-wiring. Can you get a picture of the burnt/damaged wiring to give us more of an idea of the scale of the issue an whether they're likely to be related to any starting issues?

You need to use a specialist that knows about old cars and 205s in particular, if it is the worst case scenario and it needs a new loom you're probably looking at about £50 for a used loom and £100-150 for someone to fit it.

If there are burnt out wires it would probably be wise to disconnect the battery until it is sorted out.

Haha I didnt think it had a diagnostic point!!! Haha what a joke! At least they're not charging me anything for taking a look... I'll try and get some photos but I'm not picking it up today...

Somone said to me the other day... If a house was wired in 1989 it would've had to to be fully re-wired by now. :P

I would like a full refurb and somone to fit the carbs I've got to be honest :D

I thought it would cost a lot more than that to get the electrics sorted!

Thankyou so much... If you're interested my Facebook page is Black Rat 205 gti 89

(I'm trying to stay positive)

As I said, if you don't mind travelling a little, Miles / Pugracing is only about an hour from you depending which side of Bristol you're from.

Problem diagnosis, carb conversions and electrical work won't be an issue for him, and he's one of the leading 205 specialists in the country.

Miles on here offers a loom reconditioning service.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-205-Gti-1-6-1-9-Reconditioned-Engine-Loom-/251399361741?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a8891d4cd

He's also highly regarded on here, so if you had any more specific requests (carbs of w/e) he would be a good place to call for sure! Search Pugracing on google or message miles on here! good luck!

Edit: +1 what anthony said

Thanks for all the comments

I see this day in day out, Even repaired looms by so called experts are a fire waiting to happen, Thankfully all the crimps and parts are still available so fixing anything is dead easy

But give me a Ford and I'd be head scratching for a while
