Horn Not Working - Help!

Recommended Posts

Justin

Hi,

I have a 1.6 standard horn setup, but just in time for MoT they have stopped working. I am getting power to the horns but the earth wasn't working, I have ran a separate earth which seems to work - i.e I can get the electrical tester to light up. But the horns don't make a sound. They do work when I test them directly from the battery. Connections seem good, but they just don't honk!

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Justin.

Could be the stalk

When I press the stalk though I get 12V at the horn. It just doesn't honk! But it does when I test it directly on the battery. The driving lights have given up too in sympathy. Do they go to the same common earthing point as the horn?

Time for a beer.

Ta,

Justin

Yes.

Are you seeing 12v with the horn unplugged? If so try again with it plugged in and then you'll probably see a voltage drop due to resistance caused by a bad connection or stalk contacts.

Hi Kieran,

Hope you're well. Cleaned and remade all the horn connections umpteen times and seem to have got it working. I expect the two earth blocks either side of the rad could do with replacing.

I don't seem to have any power to either driving light. I will probably remove them for the MoT, but would like them working. The yellow connectors are pretty s*itty, but there's no power to them. Earlier today, I noticed that the driving lights came on with the main beam as usual, but stayed on when I flicked back to dipped beam. They went off when I turned the lights off, but haven't worked since. Could this be as sign that relay is kaput? Is it the green relay in the box near the n/s scuttle?

Cheers,

Justin

Remove the earth blocks.
Remake all the earths with ring terminals and bolt to the stud for the earth block.

Had my earth blocks replaced as above.

Lights now working fine. However, horn has stopped working.

I'll keep my eye on this thread.

The driving lights aren't part of the MOT so no need to remove them, just unplug them if they are still sticking on.

I've only ever seen driving lights stick on when they are switched on while the headlights are removed for whatever reason, the relay sticks due to the headlights not being part of the circuit so I imagine a bad earth could do the same and that is probably the cause of all of these issues.

Simes suggestion of ring connectors is the way forward IMO.

I kept mine original and have no issues.

The option above will be the cheapest option.

The time you have bought 4 or 5 earth blocks (minimum order size) from Peugeot and you can't buy the protective bags either, it's getting expensive.

Possible to make a bag up I guess if you want the O.E look?

IIRC that brown wire is the horn earth.

Did you use a toothed washer?

It was my mechanic/garage who done it.

I'll have a look in the morning and replace if need be.

Cheers Kieran.

If you find yourself in a scrapyard at any point and come across a 205 - remove the earth block from inside the cabin under the steering column. As it's inside it's likely to be in decent condition.

Good shout, also the one behind the n/s tail light.

Stalk is the likely to be the problem. If you push the horn stalk and hear no relay click then that's your first point of call.

Try the headlamp flashers and then try horn again.

You'll probably have to source another, I've got 3 but all are in a similar condition.

Mine normally fails 3 minutes from the test centre.

No relay on a 1.6, only the 1.9 with an airhorn

No click. No joy with head light.

Will need to find a working stalk.

Tried a replacement horn Stalk from Anthony. Still no click, still no horn.

There was no washer on the earth replacement. Fitted a toothed washer. Still no horn.

Took the horn itself out cleaned up all connections. Still no horn. :(

Time to go inside the cabin.

What am I looking for there?

Regards.

Have you tried temporarily wiring the horn directly to a battery to check it still works?

No.

Remember I am an idiot.

Give me an idiots guide on how to do that.

Sorry. I can't even pretend that I am joking!

You'll need some old wire and ideally some crimps that will connect to the horn.

Unplug the horn from the car, plug your two lengths of wire into it then touch the other ends onto the battery terminals.

Just make sure it's not between the hours of 11:30 pm and 7:00 am if you're in a built up area

Right. I've skipped rice pudding to do this.

Horns out.

Old wires.

Dodgy old connectors found and crudely connected.

Taped the 2 horns together and connected to the battery.

Yes they work and yes they made me jump and yes I hit my head on the bonnet. :)

Now where do I go?
