406 Driveshaft Cv's. Tripod/ball Bearing

Recommended Posts

allye

I'm having a right headache with driveshafts and it's the only stopping me getting on the road, and getting to pugfest.

So I need to rebuild one of my shortened driveshafts, n/s short one. Now, both ends of my driveshaft are the tripod type with 3 roller pin bearings, the replacement one I got to exchange the bearings over has a non rebuild able type bearing cv on the outer and the tripod on the inner.

My question is what's the difference between mine and the replacement, one pattern one genuine? How can I get a drive shaft with the tripod at both ends to rebuild mine!?

Many thanks, ali

(Hope that makes sense)

You dont want the tripod outer type, the 6 ball & cage as per o.e is stronger.

Not sure which type you hsve, puc please!!

there won't be rollers in the outer joint.

get a standard 406 or c5 ml shaft, get it shortened, job done.

I took both v6 shafts out of my car this morning :(

Could have brought them at least as far as Cardiff for you! :(

I do have a n/s driveshaft to work with, but it has the cage on the outer and tripod on the inside. Mine are tripod both ends.

Ball and cage can be removed, just held on by a wire clip.

should have added I have broken a 406 v6 recently and litteraly have nearly everything left bar the engine. The shafts are both genuine items with 113k on them.

and from a coupe

the splines on the driveshaft are the same both sides, so you can remove completely the tripod outer bearing and replace with the ball and cage bearing from the spare shaft.

Oh right, I've no idea what shaft ali has then! not anything I have seen before! All the ones I have seen or shortened have the call and cup outer bearing.

does anyone know if these drive shafts will be the same for any ml5t gearbox conversion or is it just for the V6?

As long as the lateral location is the same they would work on another engine and ml box yes.

Sadev use the ml spline pattern and cups too.

It will be on an XU10J4TE engine, but don't know the lateral position of the V6 to say if they are compatible.

Would certainly make my life easier if they fit.

Does anyone know who shortened them?
