Fuel Filler Assembly

Recommended Posts

Hey there

I have noticed a strong smell of petrol in the car at most times, it gets worse in traffic when stationary.

I think its likely to be a seal somewhere as it doesn't look like any leaks.

I have looked and looked but cannot find a decent image of how the pipes/filler assembly looks and connects - the inner wing has a large rubber cover over the filler cap part, with a hose clip on it. I assume the pipe is under this and that is just a cover?

Does anyone have any images of the whole assembly?

Thanks :)

I don't have one to hand but I certainly can take one tomorrow afternoon, the filler neck for mine is in the shed. I'll check back tomorrow and see if anyone else has put a photo up for you, if not i'll take a few.

As well as the filler neck there is also a couple of vent pipes on top of the tank

Also look at the rubber pipes connecting to the pump on top of the tank they can perish and weep

Check under the rear drivers side seats - prise off the two plastic covers and see if the fuel pump and sender unit are ok. I'm about to replace my seals on them as everytime I fill up it stinks of petrol and pisses over the side!

Thanks for the reply guys - what am I looking for around the pump and sender? (apart from petrol!) is there any way to tell if the seals are perished easily?

Luckily I don't have a rear seat so its easy to check

As promised, not a huge amount to see in the photos but there they are!

I'd agree with the comments above and say if it smells of petrol most of the time, even when moving it's probably not the filler cap end, most likely a connection under the seat.

Brilliant, this helps understand it. Thank you!

So the large rubber cover with hose clip is lose on mine - i am guessing it doesn't actually matter - what is that top cover thing by the filler cap actually for?

Cheers

The rubber sleeve that's approx 10cm diameter and 30cm long just seals the hole between the filler cap hole and the hole in the wheel arch and creates a "tunnel" for the filler and breather hoses.

Another question fuel relayed.

Looking towards the rear of the car would one of the units on the tank be the 'floater' which controls the fuel gauge.

My gauge moves about a bit. Half a tank of petrol moves up and down between quarter and half on a regular basis.

If it is one of these are they serviceable?

Regards.

The tank level sender unit is the one nearest the centre of the car, accessed through the large plastic plugs under the rear seat.

If yours is playing up bin it fit another.

Do NOT be tempted to mess about with it to try and make it work. A spark from it inside the fuel tank would not end well!

Usually they work well on 205's so just fit a replacement.

My local main dealer is useless.

Cheers.
