Visual Differences Between 1.6 And 1.9 Head?

Recommended Posts

Are there any external visual differences between a 1.6 and 1.9 head? How would I know which head I have looking at it on the car?

they are identical between 115 and 128 and 122 bhp engines, 105 bhp 1.6 have smaller valves, 105 bhp 1.9 have much larger combustion chambers and shorter valves, externally they look the same.

So basically the only way to know which one you have is to pull it out?

specifically, yes, but the engine code will tell you, not that it matters between normal 1.6 and 1.9, its just a different cam.

Aren't valve sizes different too?

Yes, I'm going around in circles... :(

Question, being that the cam is different, and it is readily accessible, can I find part numbers stamped somewhere on the cam? Or are there any visual differences between camshafts?

Are you wanting to identify the head so that you can tell if an engine is a 1.6 or 1.9, or do you specifically need to know which head it has?

Well, my engine is a 1.6, but I have heard from different sources I have 105 and 115 hp (either head), so I am looking to know for sure what I have on my car. If I have the 1.9 head then I'll be looking to invest in a Schrick camshaft for it.

What's your engine code (if the tag is still there)?

IMO an 89 CTI should be a B6D 115bhp engine which has the later spec head that is the same valve sizes as the 1.9GTI.

The negine tag is there but split in two and I think not fully legible. I'll take a picture later today.

The 105hp 1.6 doesn't have a breather pipe on the cam cover, while the 115hp does.

That settles it then, as mine has the breather pipe too.

Doesn't mean anything,as you can run the later head with the older style cam cover or the 2.0 8v turbo uses the same one, Only way for sure is to remove it

Yes, of course the car would have a 1.9 head cover on a 1.6 head.

What I'kl be doing is opening the head cover and measuring cam lobes. That should be the sure fire way to find out without removing the head.

11.5 mm lift for 1.6 head,9.5 mm for 1.9, correct?
