Robbie G 4 Posted November 18, 2003 Now that it's dark at like 4.30 I do a lot more driving at night, and I'm fed up with the feeble orange light that trickles out of from the front of my car. I want some bright white lights that'll turn night into day! I'd like to know... - manufacturer and make - whether they do them for headlights and spotlights - where to get them They have to be... - 100% legal for MOTs, police etc - guaranteed to be supported by the pissy threadbare 205 wiring PS I've done a search and there were two threads that I could see, but bulb technology changes quite quickly I'd imagine. So what's new, or still good? Thanks.
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted November 18, 2003 Having decent headlights will make a BIG difference as the reflector can dramatically reduce the light output. Having said that I'm using Halford 30% brighter in the 306 and they are significantly better than boggo bulbs (but probably not the cheapest!) Rob
Guest E967XUA Posted November 18, 2003 Halfords do 90/130W headlight bulbs if you ask them, not sure about legality though. But mine passed MOT with some 80/100W in, rather than the standard 55/60W. Wiring shouldn't be a problem as the main beam is on a relay which helps reduce current draw.

R-T-S, are they just brighter or are they a whiter colour of light, like the BMW and Merc HID lights that are around nowadays?
Anthony 1,003 Posted November 18, 2003 It's worth checking out the conditions of the contacts and earthing point as well - the more these corrode, the dimmer your headlights will become. I'm pretty sure that the headlights earth to the two earthing blocks either side of the radiator, and these seem to be a magnet for corrosion and rust... Ideally, the resistance between the negative terminal of the battery and the negative connector on the back of the bulb should be as close to zero ohms as possible, and power across the two bumb contacts should be over 12v Just sorting that out will make a *huge* difference - the lights on my GTi are as good as most new cars and you can easily see where you're going without having to reach for full beams. Which is nice
Guest Al-2 Posted November 22, 2003 If the wiring is iffy, it's worth running a fresh set in - permenant live to the battery, earth, 20 amp fuse, relay and a trigger from a main beam wire. Halfords 120 watt bulbs are good, but illegal on a car as young as yours, but mine passed its MOT with them in, It's very doubtful anyone will start dismantling lamps to check their wattage. Guest simmy Posted November 22, 2003 i'm sure i read a test in magazine, car, or autocar or autoexpress... one of them! from what i remember they voted one of OSRAMS blue/white/superbright bulbs to be the best, but looking on the net i'm struggling to find a place to get em!!! Guest simmy Posted November 22, 2003 silverstars! that's it.... just remembered that's what they were called, rated above halfords etc... you'll just have to find a supllier.
Guest ScoobyJawa Posted November 25, 2003 Without a doubt - having tried them all, the Phillips Vision Plus are the best extra light bulbs available IMHO!

Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted November 25, 2003 The 30% brighter ones seem to give a whiter light than standard but not the blue/white of the gas discharge lights. Rob
Robbie G 4 Posted November 25, 2003 Whoever mentioned the state of the reflectors has a serious point. I looked at my headlights the other day, one is a newish lucas one put on by the previous owner, and the other is an original Peugeot one that looks like it's been there since day 1. The newer Lucas one had a much clearer beam than the older reflector. But they're solid units afaik, so it's not a case of just replacing the plastic bits, is it? So my plan is this: - New reflectors (or headlights if necessary) - Clean the earth points and wiring terminals associated with the lights (I'm not re-wiring the whole thing) - Try these Phillips Vision Plus bulbs, because others have mentioned these to me aswell Hopefully that should sort it. Anyone know if the reflectors on the headlight can be replaced individually?
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted November 25, 2003 Think you have to buy the complete light, one reason I haven't done it. (Other being I'm lazy!)
blackscooby 0 Posted November 25, 2003 I use PIAA PLATINUM SUPER WHITE in my main beam lights on the bm. Flaming fantastic. I think they are mainly targetted at the competition market, but they are the most white lights I've seen in a long long time. Not entirely sure that they are E approved, but it didn't fail its test on them either. Have a look at www.piaa.com The Beemer uses H3 bulbs, but PIAA do lights for different formats. The pic below shows the difference in color. Left is the dipped bulb (standard), and right is the main using a PIAA. BMW lights are usually bloody bright as standard but look how yellow it is in comparison.
Guest ScoobyJawa Posted November 26, 2003 PIAA are dead good too - but I couldn't recommend them as they are just silly money for hardly being much better than the Phillips Sorry didn't say - www.powerbulbs.com for the Phillips Vision Plus (don't get blue vision - not quite as good) You also get a free set of blue vision sidelights (blue vision fine for these ) Cheers Neil
Guest richard Posted November 26, 2003 Just had a look scooby, and they have the pug205 down as years 95 96 97 98.......hmmn no 92!
Guest ScoobyJawa Posted November 26, 2003 Just order phillips vision plus in H4 size Thats the correct ones for the 205, as I re-used mine out of my scoob in the pug - same type of bulb - didn't half make a difference
