Can A Ph2 Xsara Rack Be Rebuilt Into A 306 Casing?

I have been working to find a knocking noise in the front suspension of my 205 and I have found play in the passenger side of the steering rack. I was trying to work out my options and obviously one of them is a xsara rack. I wanted a ph1 rack because I don't really want to re-run all of my pas pipes (I have to work on the car in the road and I want to keep the actual on-car work to a minimum.)

There aren't many(any) around but ph2 racks seem not too hard to get hold of.

Does anyone know if a ph2 xsara rack could be rebuilt into a 306 casing to give a direct fit psuedo ph1 rack?
