Best Brand For Major Service Parts

Recommended Posts

My XU9J4 engine is about to come out of one shell and into another.

I'll give it a major service in the transition.

ECP has a sale on and a few different brands of cambelt kit, idler, etc etc.

I've always stuck with Gates on my own engines, but they have others - SKF and a 'not named' brand (the most expensive?).

Also tensioners and idealers:

Elsewhere Dayco kits have both included, the ECP sold ones seemed to only have the tensioner (or more looks like an ideler to me in the photos??)?

Also water pump - ECP do various, - Valeo the best?

Any thoughts and suggestions?

Cheers.

The 1.9 XU9J4 has two tensioners and no idler, kits with idlers are probably for 2.0 XU10J4s.

the 2.0 engine has two tensioners too.

its the later generation of engines with adjustable cam pulleys that have an idler.

The XU10J4 one does however at a glance look like an idler on a metal plate, rather than a normal eccentric tensioner. Easy way to confirm is that a XU9J4 cambelt should be 133 teeth, whereas XU10J4 and the later 1.8/2.0 16v engines are all more than that.

Either way, in answer to the original question, I don't tend to have too much issue with any known premium brand of cambelt - Gates, Contitech, Dayco I've all used in the past and have worked and lasted well.

Waterpumps, avoid the nasty no-names budget items and stick to some known premium brand and it should be fine.

Cool. Thanks guys (especially clearing up the idler tensioner thing).
