Gti6 With Piper 270

Recommended Posts

dexter1002

Bought an engine with piper 270 cams in it and I've gone to change the cambelt. I locked the crank and found that the cam pulley holes don't line up.

I rang piper and they said exhaust is 110 before TDC and inlet 110 ATDC. Has anyone timed these up as I thought being a very mild cam it would be on standard timing holes.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Dexter

I'd bet good money the bottom pulley has slipped, common as a common thing with these engines.

Sadly, costly to replace, but using an 8v pulley to time up with is an option, or the various alloy ones that some of our members sell :)

Bottom pulley is easy to check as there is witness marks on it.

not on all of them, there are several types and tbh with it being to the nth of a degree on these and you have a tapper, its not worth the gamble.

easier to time these up by lift @ TDC, which for these cams is 1.09mm, so one of the safest cams you can use, however I would still confirm whether the head has been skimmed ever, as space is pretty minimal.

About half a hole out, I've got a picture but it's not letting me upload it as it's too big.

No experience with the Piper 270 cam, but Petert's St1 cam doesn't line up with the standard timing hole by a couple of millimetres when timed up to spec.

Check the timing with a DTI against TDC as said.
