Rwd Space Frame 106

Recommended Posts

Right, thought i would share a project i'm helping a mate with, as he has very little fabrication skills, (neither do i but hey!)

It started life a few years ago as a 2.0 hot rod saxo, with a pinto engine on carbs and a escort rear axle.

it won the 2012 championship in what ever race it ran im

Thats what it used to look like a couple of years ago, with fibreglass doors, bonnet and boot and full space frame.

as he is never going to race it weve decided to remove most of the 'hot rod' parts and turn it into a track car.

As its been designed from scratch, has no chassis from the original car what so ever, its basically a kit car with a saxo shell on top, its very close to the floor so would be an ideal track car.

To do this we are going to ditch the saxo shell with its mazzive steel arches and side skirts and fit a 106 shell to it once we find one.

he want to put anothe pinto engine it it, i have no idea why!!

this is what it looked like when we got it, surrounded by a fence and aload of nettles!

unfortunately the coilovers and wide wheels had been taken off and most probably sold on

Got it in the workshop and managed to strip it down in a couple of hours and started removing the body work

unfortunately it looks like i will be doing alot of welding and maybe replacing a few tubes of the frame,

The frame was built be a 'professional' racing company, witch looked as though it was built inside of the saxo shell as when we cut the roof off we noticed the frame had not been welded all the way around the joins, safe ay!

Trying to persuade him to keep the rear wing, maybe we can make a copy in carbon and have it a bit lower down

flipped it on its side to inspect underneath,

surprising how light it is, apparently it was raced at 600kg with the driver, i haven't a clue what the rules are on weights of these cars but there is concrete ballast behind the drivers seat and by the battery tray at the rear

Looks like a giant kart chassis!

Will be a big project but should be a lot of fun when finished, keep at it!

This looks like it could be great.

See he was sponsored by Bridges. Did he race all over, or just Arlington/Angermering??

He could well have raced against my mate Greg Guilliou.

Who'd all contracted a severe mental illness?

That frame is dire !

Im a bit puzzled really as some of the frame is really good its been welded really nicely, it looks like they gave up halfway through and someone else took over! and welded poorly, so im going to try do my best
