Exhaust Manifold Studs

Im changing the exhaust manifold as mine has cracked.

 

I was intending on cutting the nuts off with a dremel to avoid the risk of shearing studs.

 

The plan was to then clean the threads up using a wire brush then run a die nut down them before reinstalling using new copper nuts.

 

I am worried about trying to remove the studs incase they shear.

 

What do you guys recon to the plan?

Just take them out! I've never snapped one yet.

Not had a snapped stud, only ever experienced rounded nuts or seized onto the stud and winds the stud out, cleaned up in the vice with a wire brush and a die, job done.

 

A good 6 sided socket is required, and some irwin nutgrips if that fails.

I don't. I clean them up and put them back.

Im getting genuine nuts and gasket so do I need any paste or sealant?

Nope.

 

Make sure you get the down pipe fitting kit too.

Just heed WP's advice on the 6 sided socket. Otherwise you will round them off.

 

Hit them with penetrating spray often before removing.

I used brass nuts. They undo much easier after a length of time.

Miles does a really good set of brass/copper type flanged nuts for the exhaust manifold, well worth the money.

I've always found giving them a bit of a tap with a hammer first often loosens them up,

Ive ordered some from peugeot which I hope are brass/copper ones.
