Mi16 Engine Numbers

I have the engine number off my alloy MI16 and i'm wondering if there is a way to get the details of the car it came from off of that number. The year and history of the car it came from are a complete mystery as i bought it as a bare block 7years ago. having the year or VIN number would make sourcing parts much easier.
