Which Starter Motor?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I'm just going through the process of getting my car back on the road after a long lay up and having had to replace the brake pipes and fit a new igniton module ( after jump starting with a van!) was making progress setting the timing when I then began having trouble starting it. Eventually after a bit of head scratching i thought I'd swap out the old starter for an older spare from the shed and this did the trick.

I think the one I removed was from the original 1.9 engine and the replacement which is also faulty was from the 2.0 mi16 lump currently in the car. So I need to get a new starter and the question is does it matter which one I get, 1.9gti, 2.0 mi16, 2,0 S16? Any help is gladly appreciated.

Any XU starter should fit, but personally, I would get a slimline Valeo starter from a late 90's 306/406/Xantia/Xsara etc 1.8/2.0 16v

Make sure that the starter is the issue and not a wiring related issue, which is common (usually get nothing or just a click when you turn the key)

Thanks Anthony, yeah keep getting the click. The one I've put on is a slimline and sounds much nicer when it does start, can't believe the size of the other one it's a beast in comparison!
