Rubbish Cv Boot

Recommended Posts

Guest davemar

I've had no end of problems with an outer CV boot on my n/s driveshaft. I fitted it a while ago, and it was bought from GSF and is a Mellior (sp?) part. It just doesn't want to grip the outer shaft rim, and keep slipping off which sprays grease everywhere. I do the clip up as tight as possible, but it just too easy to pop the thing off. It seems the boot is just too big for the job and doesn't natually grip the rim. Has anyone else used these CV boots? Are they they same as Peugeot's orignal's or would I be better off getting one from a Pug dealer?

;) It's easier to replace the driveshaft - a lot less hassle and something you'll have to do in the future anyway.

I'm keeping my eye out for a cheap one anyway, but it'll be nice to get this sorted. The driveshaft itself is in good nick and relatively new. I just needed to replace the CV boot as I accidently split the old one when removing the driveshaft recently.

replace the clip with a big long strong tie wrap or join two together. that should do it .

I've tried that with no success. It just seems the boot is just a few mm too large and is naturally slack, rather than needing a little stretching to get it over.

the metal clips you get with a new boot often dont work for me and i have to use a tie wrap . but you do need to completely remove all the grease from where the boot seals to the shaft and where the wrap contacts the boot before it will stay on for good .

There is a proper tool that you can use to do the metal strapping. G.S.F. sell the kit. Ligarex I think it's called, and I bet it can put much more tension through the strap than using your hands!

I did see that tool in the GSF catalogue, but is it worth the expensive for doing one CV boot? I might consider it if it does a really good job and might be used again.

I'm not sure how good it is. But if it's crap, surely you can take it back and get a refund?

The nearest GSF to me is the Heathrow one about 70 miles away, so its a bit of a trek, just to return something.

Anyway, I just popped down to the local Pug dealer to investigate about CV boots, and in true Peugeot fashion there seems to be 3 different sorts available for the 1.9 GTi, and it doesn't seem to correspond to age or anything. The diagram shows that two of the boots have different shaped lips (oooerr!) and the third might be different in some way, but their isn't anything showing how. So me and the assistant were rather in the dark about which one to choose. Any ideas which one it should be, or does it matter?

Just checked my parts CD & it only list's one type of boot for the XU9JA 3293 91.

edit; also this post reminded me I had said I would ask my local independent Pug specialist what boots they used & had found to be the strechiest for going over the cone tool.

He uses AMK & get's them from Plunketts.

I've got the print out here from the CD (well the dealer's computer at least). As you say it lists 3293-91 (the 3rd type) is for XU9JA cars, but the other two also are for XU engined cars too it seems, and doesn't say its not for the GTi, which seemed to be the assisstants point of view. Though I am tempted to think it is the 3293-91 version as you say.

I'll try and hunt down some AMK boots, though is Plunkett's a northern based shop?

I think that they will only be for the 1.6, diesel. TD & auto models.

On the cd I have looking for it under rear axle hub swivel triangle, then Driveshaft, you have a choice of axle side & wheel side, mine list's three for the XU but only one for the 1.9GTI which is the number you have.

Gordon Plunketts are a mainly northern based shop, could even be just Yorkshire but they are like Partco & Andrew Pages.

I think I've had success at last. I did have another CV boot knocking around of the same type that was causing problems, however this one seemed to fit nicely. I gave the shaft a good clean up, and put grease in very carefully so not to get it where it wasn't wanted. The CV boot seemed to grip well and stand up to lots of wiggling of the CV joint, so hopefully it'll all be fine now  .
