Coilovers With Standard Top Mounts

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd do a quick coilover assembly earlier so I could see how they went together.

Here on the right is the top mount assembly minis the original 205 spring seat and bearing.

Assembled like such

Here's the spring with the Gaz seat.

Does my mock assembly a few pics above fit on top of the black Gaz seat without any bearing?

I wondered if an original bearing would fit in mix, but couldn't see how it would effectively without movement.

So in my mind this is how it would go - although I'm not convicted so seeking some clarity

Upside down with spring rising from this:

Do many people run these without helper springs? Mine are 8" springs and won't be far from coil bound on the lowest setting by the looks of it

You need some bearings, if helpers are coilbound with no weight on the car you dont need them.

I think I've sussed it now.

Obviously that's not fully at home - it's corroded and there's no point me forcing a used one on.

Allows it to then sit like this:

That's got to be how it goes :)

That's how mine are, not sure if it's 100% correct as the bearing seams a bit open to the elements.

Now ready to bung these on the car but have a final question about the thick washer.

On one set of shocks I split down the washer was in this position to space the cup:

8EDC270F-231B-4429-B62D-28FB5E9D6DD0-200

On another it was directly on the shaft which I would say was correct but want to be sure:

Service box diagram doesnt show the position of it annoyingly!

yep, should be on the top of the shaft under everything,

you'll notice the original bumpstop has a matching recess in the top.
