What Does Everybody Put In 95 Or 97 Ron

Recommended Posts

GWtaylor

As title says whats better for the standard set up for a 1.9

Is 95 ron ok or can it cause damage over a long period?

Thanks

I did use the search function but it only came up with race fuel topics

Depends what the ignition timing has been set to.

1.9 GTi's (non-CAT) should be setup for and run on 97 RON or higher.

Some people have retarded the igition to allow them to run on 95 RON, but performance and responce are compromised unacceptably in my view and, judging by the fact that Peugeot stated that they weren't adaptable for 95 RON, Peugeots view too.

Running it on 95 RON when it's setup for 97 RON will likely result in engine damage eventually.

AFAIK they're meant to be run on 97. You can retard your ignition and run on 95 though.

Edit- What Anthony said ;)

Mine used to run rubbish on the cheap stuff. I use the good stuff and it does make a big difference to my 1.9.

What about in an XU10J4RS?

It says on service box that it should be on 95

Use 95 then...

97 will obviously be better as the timing will be advanced via the knock sensor

My old Mi16 (with knock sensor) ran better on 95!

Tried mine on 95 each time with £30 worth, then switched to 97 again £30 worth after the first 4 or 5 loads and advancing the timing ran loads better. I did switch back to 95 but just didn’t feel the same.

Run the 1600 on 97+ and its loads better than 95,

the GTI-6 doesn't seem to care if its run on 95, 97 or cats pi55, seems to perform exactly the same.

97 BP Ultimate

99 Tesco Momentum

99 Shell V-Power

My 8v doesn't like being run on anything less than 97 RON, even after retarding the ignition.

Always run V-Power, or whatever other SUL is available if I'm not at a Shell garage.

Also forgot to add that the Tesco 99 contains ethanol to boost the octane rating, may be worth keeping in mind. I'm fairly sure V-Power doesn't contain any or only a trace.

Whilst in Italy, I had no choice but to run on 95 octane (Shell), as the service stations there, at least those around Spotorno, didn't stock anything higher graded. Not only was the performance worse, the petrol consumption was worse too....in fact it was probably more expensive in € per mile than running on 98.

Used to have a 1600 focus and the fuel consumption was so much better on sul, it never did like going back to 95 after that
